Aurie’s Star

Aurie's Star

The Aurie’s Star was first held as a midweek race at Flemington, but by 2005 it had evolved into a Listed Stakes race, and was won in that year by Niconero. The event has always been held over 1200 metres, and from 2005 to 2009 it was classed as a Listed race, after which it was elevated to it’s current Group 3 status.

The race is named after a sprinting champion of the 1930’s and 1940’s, who often carted huge weights to victory in record times. Aurie’s Star began his career in South Australia, trained by J.J Doyle, then came across to Victoria to claim the 1937 Oakleigh Plate in Australian record time. He completed the big sprint double, with victory in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. In 1939 he became the first horse to win the Oakleigh Plate more than once, with only Dual Choice in 1972 and 1973 able to emulate this.

Aurie’s Star claimed his native state’s premier sprint as a seven-year-old in 1940 when he carted 10 stone (63.5kg) to victory and the following season achieved arguably his most well-known feat when he set the Flemington ‘straight six’ record carrying 64kg.

It was a record that remained unbettered during the Imperial period and even after metric conversions stood until 1991, when finally eclipsed by Final Card in the Gadsden Stakes (now Patinack Farm Classic)

The list of previous winners of the race already contains numerous quality sprinters, with some of the most prominent including Shanghai Warrior in 2012, Temple Of Boom in 2011, Mic Mac in 2009, Grand Duels in 2008 and Bel Danoro in 2006 to name just a few.
