The Hawkesbury Rowley Mile – Thursday 21st of August 2014

The Hawkesbury Rowley Mile……..

was first run in 1881 with the 2/1 favourite Wandering Jew winning the inaugural event for Mr W.A Long.

The race takes its name from the famous Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket in the UK. Named after ‘Old Rowley’, better known as King Charles the 2nd, the site of the course was the stamping ground for the King and his horse, also known as ‘Old Rowley’. It was the King who first put equine pursuits into Newmarket and the Rowley Mile was soon a course in its own right.

The Rowley Mile is a right-handed course covering a distance of two miles and two furlongs. It is unique as the start is actually in Cambridgeshire and the finish is in Suffolk. The course turns right handed into an undulating straight at the 1 mile 2 furlong mark, the final furlong of which is uphill and will expose stamina and speed weaknesses. It is a very tough test for young horses as its dips and undulations demand total concentration and good horsemanship from the jockeys.
