Sire: Exceed and Excel
Dam: Del Mar (NZ)
Age/Colour/Sex: 3yo Bay Colt
Trainer: Peter Snowden
The Darley Camp are basking in Spring Carnival glory with Guelph and Long John producing stunning performances and bringing home the bacon.
And now another Darley runner, a leggy Colt out of Exceed and Excel, is making his presence felt. The Little known San Diego has been quietly going about his business, but we think it’s his time to shine as he gears up for the Group 1 Victoria Derby.
In his most recent efforts the lightly raced 3 year old challenged his stable mate Long John in the Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes at Flemington. Despite racing keenly in the early stages he worked home under pressure to finish a respectable 3rd. San Diego then took on another classy field in the drama fuelled Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600M) at Flemington. Running into heavy traffic San Diego was denied a clear run to finish 6th behind Divine Calling.
Despite his breeding, Darley’s Melbourne trainer Paul Snowden expects him to be more competitive over longer distances.
Snowden admits that an Exceed And Excel stayer is not something that you see every day, but suggests the well framed colt tends to throw more to his dam, who is a Zabeel mare.
San Diego will attempt the longer distance of 2000M this weekend in the Norman Robinson Stakes before attacking the Derby.
Fillies Form is confident San Diego will reach Group 1 level and with team Darley driving the bus, who can argue?
