The Spring Fever continues in Victoria this weekend with the running of the Caulfield Cup.
Regarded as one of the toughest, richest and most prestigious 2400m thoroughbred handicaps in Australia, the Caulfield Cup has produced a bounty of champions.
Many horses seek to score the coveted Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup Double but only a handful of the toughest stayers have been able to achieve the feat, including Poseidon in 1906, Might & Power in 1997 and champion Mare Ethereal in 2001.
In recent years the Caufield Cup has been a magnet for International Raiders using the race as a stepping stone to the Melbourne Cup. This year the Australian horses dominate the field with only one overseas runner, the highly touted and 2nd favourite Dandino. Craig Williams jumps aboard Dandino in the hope of winning his 3rd consecutive Caulfeld Cup.
Yet another classy bunch of stayers make up the open field with the Chris Waller trained Hawkspur favourite for the event. His stable mate Royal Descent is also firming in the betting while Silent Achiever and Dear Demi are waiting in the wings with their light weights. Fawkner will represent the Lloyd Williams stable while in form runner Julienas will represent the Waterhouse stable and round out the final field of 18.
Come Saturday afternoon fortunes will be won, the Champagne will flow and a legend will be added to the Caulfield Cup honor roll.
So who is your tip for the Caulfield Cup in 2013?
